What are migraines?
Migraines are not simply severe headaches but a neurological condition characterized by recurring episodes of head pain and other symptoms.
Key Characteristics:
- Pain: Typically described as throbbing or pulsating, often affecting one side of the head, though it may involve both.
- Duration: Episodes can persist for several hours to several days.
- Associated Symptoms: Commonly accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light, sound, or even certain smells.
- Aura (in some cases): Approximately one-third of individuals experience warning signs prior to the headache, such as visual disturbances (flashes of light, blind spots), tingling sensations, difficulty speaking, or trouble concentrating.
What are the triggers?
- Stress, fatigue, or disrupted sleep patterns
- Hormonal changes, particularly in relation to the menstrual cycle
- Specific foods and beverages, including caffeine, alcohol, aged cheeses, and processed meats
- Dehydration
- Environmental factors such as bright lights or strong odors
Types of Migraines
- Migraine without aura (most common)
- Migraine with aura (involving warning symptoms before onset)
- Chronic migraine (occurring 15 or more days per month, with at least 8 fulfilling migraine criteria)

What are Triptans?
Triptans are a group of medicines that interact with specific receptors in the brain, counteracting the alterations believed to trigger migraines. Triptans treat the underlying cause of migraines alleviating additional symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, and heightened sensitivity to light or sound.
Triptans include sumatriptan, rizatriptan, and zolmitriptan.
How to you take Sumatriptan?
Take one tablet with water, with or without food. Take one dose when your migraine starts then wait at least two hours before taking a second dose. Only take the second dose if you have felt the effects of the first. Maximum of 2 doses can be taken in a 24-hour period.
What are the side effects of Sumatriptan?
Side effects include nausea, vomiting, tiredness/drowsiness, and dizziness.
